JACQUES VERRECCHIA practices intellectual property and entertainment law in Paris, representing a variety of established artists, film producers, public figures and media entities. In over three decades as an Avocat au Barreau de Paris, Mr. Verrecchia has distinguished himself as a leader in the entertainment field. His practice encompasses both litigation and transactional work.
Mr. Verrecchia has extensive expertise in matters of defamation, media law and right of publicity. He has argued right of privacy cases before the Cour de Cassation -- the French supreme court, representing high-profile public figures and helping establish game-changing case law all the way to the European Court of Justice. His practice has also led him to address the interplay between traditional media law and online media. In 1998, he filed - and won -- the first ever internet-related case before the Tribunal de Grande Instance de Paris, which led to legislative action codifying the civil liability of web-hosting companies.
In addition to his media law expertise, Mr. Verrecchia is credited with establishing legal precedents critical to the music industry; as lead counsel in a landmark case, he was instrumental in redefining contractual relationships between artists and their record labels, leading French courts to reconsider how ownership of master recordings is affected by the legal framework that governs such relationships.
Mr. Verrecchia's practice also extends to trademark law, including matters relating to unfair competition, trademark dilution and the protection of famous marks. He counsels corporate entities in the management and exploitation of their intellectual property, helping them structure and negotiate business transactions such as licensing agreements and distribution deals, both domestically and internationally.
Mr. Verrecchia is accredited in France as an intellectual property specialist; he is also one of three attorneys recognized as musicology experts in the country and, in that capacity, is frequently called upon in infringement litigation.
(Note: Mr. Verrecchia is not admitted to practice law in the United States.)
